Built on an incredibly cool and unique premise (a disembodied, immortal head traveling in a birdcage alongside two peculiar individuals), the show follows a trio of supernatural detectives through a beautifully gothic, 19th-century Europe. The story is structured around murder mysteries filled with monsters, literary figures, and classic detective tropes. Honestly? I enjoyed every second of it. It takes everything I love about the monster mystery genre and delivers.

A case where it could go for so much more but the pacing held it back.
The main weakness of the show is the preference of characters arcs instead of story and plot. There's this tiny thing about saving the kingdoms behind everyone eyes but is not the main focus enough to drive the story. Youko' character arc gets over pretty quickly so I lost interesting in everything else. Then, after 5 episodes the show jumped and presents you with so many different things is kind of hard to keep up and focus on what's really important. This anime suprised me. I thought it would be more dumb and hallow, but Kyoko is both stupid and cute in a endearing way. I like the format of her trying to prove herself in the entertainment industry. And her dynamics with all of the characters is mature, funny and truthful.
However, it lacks characters depth . The anime barely scratchs the surfaces of her past, her relationship with Fuwa and Fuwa himself. Even if he is an asshole, I felt like there wasn't enough story between them to engage with. Her entire life got changed by him and we get nothing for 10 episodes, and ...

The main issue with this anime is how good it is, how great the characters are and how insanely good the plot it is. And 13 episodes is not enough!!! Clearly. The anime is good, but you can tell some scenes should be longer or the transition to a moment/place to another needed more time to flesh out. At the same time, we spend too much time in moments where we needed to spend less time and other moments need like 3 episodes to actually enjoy it.

This movie was really cool, the animation never disappointed, and the story was okay for the most part. If you get really picky you will notice some plot holes or you might want to rewatch several times to get the full picture, but honestly?
