Because Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite work, I thought I might struggle to enjoy the Rebuild films, knowing that small parts of the story had been changed—something I personally consider already perfect.
In this film, unlike Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0, which largely follows the same path as the beginning of the original anime, many elements of the 1995 storyline are altered. However, I didn’t find these changes to be negative. Of course, I still prefer the original material, but the modifications don’t harm the work as a whole—on the contrary, they further enrich the Evangelion universe.

In my view, this film works as a kind of satire of both Hollywood action cinema and Westernism as a whole.
When it comes to Hollywood tropes, the movie deliberately uses several clichés: the short-tempered mafia boss, the aura-farming samurai, the femme fatale, the cop who is always chasing the protagonist, the government secretly operating behind the population’s back, and many other tropes that American action movies use all the time. The satire of Westernism is something I personally felt while watching it. Even though this is a Japanese production, you can notice a striking Eurocentrism in the museum Mamo built to represent the history of humanity. ...

A good story for a one-shot.
It won’t change your life or anything like that, but it’s definitely worth reading. I did feel that some parts could have used a bit more development, which would have helped build a stronger emotional impact in the two final battles. Still, the story feels quite self-contained. The manga’s art is what really makes it worth the read. The battle panels are incredible. It’s really awesome to see Miura’s art in a work that isn’t Berserk.
