Maichan's Daily Life follows an immortal girl whose body slowly heals after being dismembered, decapitated, mutilated, or burned. The process takes as long as it would for a real-world wound to heal, but her body can regenerate organs, skin tissue, eyes, and more.
Mai is a 17-year-old maid who works at a mansion to please her mistresses and clients. She never seems bothered by being used as a torture object and comes across as very naive. When she resists, it is in childish ways such as grinding store-bought meat instead of her arm or teaching her little brother how to clean rather than how to be
...
an idealized torture toy.
At one point, she starves herself to death out of grief after her friend Sayurin, an amputee who cannot speak and is treated like a pet, dies. The cause is a knife somehow slipping out of Mai’s skull and hitting Sayurin perfectly in the face. (Physics don't work like that...) Mai then conveniently forgets all of it because the plot needs to move on. Many arcs start with events that are later forgotten or never matter for the rest of the manga.
The main problem with Maichan is that it doesn't know who it wants to appeal to. It begins as extreme pulp manga for sadists who enjoy the idea of torturing an innocent girl repeatedly without killing her. Later, it shifts tone and reads more like a shitpost, which undermines the sadist-fantasy appeal.
There is a random political cameo featuring George Bush. He acts nothing like the US president and rips out Mai’s fetus and blends it for some reason. One of the maids becomes angry when he rips out her eye and stabs him in the head. This does not kill him but gives him brain damage. The manga presents this in a jokey way as if to explain, “This is why George was dumb lol.” America’s politics add nothing, just like Kizuna, Sayurin, or the tiger do. These events matter in the moment and are never mentioned again. The manga seems obsessed with outdoing itself in how cruel it can go.
The story is intended to shock in a juvenile, “I am 14 and want everyone disgusted” kind of way. Most characters are either sadists, pure evil, or victims.
Midway through the story, we meet Kizuna, Mai’s little brother, who exists mostly as a plot device. He does two things. First, Mai is forced to have sex with him, becomes pregnant, and the baby girl is killed in the next chapter. Second, he is later sold to someone else, and Mai never sees him again, causing her more mental anguish.
The takeaway is simple. Maichan is a waste of time. The manga is packed with hentai guro scenes, including clients abusing Mai, burning her, cutting her apart, and dismembering her, but aside from the fetish parts, the story is incoherent. Characters appear only to suffer and disappear. Mai is the universe’s punching bag, and the manga expects readers to derive pleasure from her pain, whether physical or mental.
Even if you like guro, it offers nothing. It's too shitposty to be gratifying for extreme-guro fans, too repulsive for anyone outside the fetish, and too try-hard edgy to be funny ironically.
It appeals to nobody.
