Hi Jason Kaneki. I came from your Lost in Starlight review (I didn't memorize the Korean title ahahaha). I'm one of the people who felt moved by the movie emotionally and I can explain why that was the case for me.

I was drawn in by the characters really. Joo Nan-young came across as this driven, independent career woman whose life seemed to revolve around work and her family. And honestly, I found that very believable because that's the impression I get of South Korea. High pressure and societal expectations with regards to work and life and all.

So when Nan-young met Jay and started a relationship with him, I was very emotionally invested in their relationship. Jay seemed to draw out a more childlike and uninhibited side of Nan-young which I loved witnessing. I also found the flirting and banter to be realistic. So I could find myself rooting for their relationship and for the characters themselves.

I also liked how they delved more into Jay's side later. To me, Jay seemed sort of stagnant and was just floating around Nan-young. So in a personal sense, his growth was slow. That's how I saw it. But Jay as a boyfriend was perfect though. He always supported Nan-young and celebrated her wins and helped her get through the hard times. So when it showed how he slowly got back into music, it felt really rewarding to me. Maybe Nan-young's passion influenced him. Or maybe he was bound to get back on track. But it fascinates me that these are two people whose dreams are in line with their work, but their challenges are also tied to their work (Nan-young's mom and Jay's music direction).

I'm probably not getting to the point here ahahaha. But if I guess that's the thought process I had watching the movie. They felt like real people with real problems. I could always feel the themes of love, family, and career. And while it's set in a futuristic setting, I found myself most fixated on the characters. I found myself in Jay's shoes when he sees the devastating news of his lover being MIA. I found myself in Nan-young's shoes when she could see images of her most loved people in a near death situation. And yes... Some of those developments did seem too convenient, but that didn't take away my enjoyment of the movie since my focus was primarily on the characters.

I did see the points you made in your review. You made very good points about the story. I also think the whole finding the shelter her mom worked in and all was a bit too convenient. Even Nan-young's motivation for going to space was vague. But I guess I personally dismissed that point since I figured she was attached to space because of her parents' work and also because she invested a lot of time and effort into that goal (sunk cost fallacy, I guess). So yeah... That's my take on it. It's not going to change your opinion of the movie, but I hope my perspective helped you get why people were moved by the movie.
