| Mikami-sensei turned out to be Reiko, and she’s the dead. I guess it makes sense, the clues were there. But it didn’t feel satisfying at all. I think it comes down to time. No matter who the dead turned out to be, it probably wouldn’t have been satisfying because we’re so detached from most of the characters, aside from Misaki and Kouichi. The mansion owner being Takabayashi-kun’s grandparents. how was anyone supposed to know that? I just really hate how this show wrapped things up with the previous episode and this one. Because before episode 11, I actually liked how the show progressed slowly but steadily. We never got a real explanation for why the students suddenly went insane other than “they were stressed.” We got no explanation about the calamity either. We’re just supposed to accept that it exists and will continue every year. I understand the idea of leaving some things unexplained to keep the mystery engaging, but it doesn’t sit well with me in this show. We also got no explanation for the power of Misaki’s eye. This anime is exactly why I dislike horror shows. |

| well this was certainly a wild one! lots of dark twists, that's for sure. since episode 11 i was suspecting akazawa to be the extra, really did not think it was reiko. reiko being ms. mikami was almost a good surprise. some of the cliffhangers really annoyed me but an overall great anime :3 |

| Doing a rewatch of my favourites (10/10s) to see if I need to adjust the ratings. I rewatched this with my partner since he hadn't seen the anime at all. I have to say, I still love it. It still gives me that Final Destination vibe, and even 11 years later, I stand by my rating. I love this anime <3 |

| Wouldn't say it's terrible, but it is too staged. I mean, there are people who like that and don't care, it's their kind of entertainment, like those who like reading detective stories as a game or a brain gum (or gym). Personaly I dislike crafted horror stories or thrillers, when it's all so calculated. That's why I like Stephen King (crafty, but so insightful and inspired sometimes) and hate Joe Hill (King's son), because he's everything his father isn't - pure staging, pure second-hand, no soul, calculated rehash of King's ideas, like AI trained on King's works. "Another" is done like using a recipe by a skilled cook, that's why it's not terrible. Is it good, though? Technicaly. Is it profound? Not even close. I'll pick much more sloppy Higurashi over Another story-wise. Another is more mood, themes, than an actual story you can sympathise with. It's more of an amusement park, a number of tropes you might like, and the director probably tried to make it look alive. But in the end it is lacking something of a staying power. Plot-wise it was too convenient. Memory loss? Okay, I suppose... Records being modified and then righted when it's over. Whaaat? What kind of supernatural powers are we talking about here? It's plain ridiculous. It's good when it makes deaths look like accidents, but it goes over the top sometimes, as if it was not Another, but Omen or something. Bad style. Also, dead person being absolutely indistinguishable from the real one, and bending the rather strict bureaucratic system of Japan, so nobody asks why a dead person is a teacher (no spoiler at this point?) - this was one of the lower points of this story. Nobody outside the class and their relatives should be affected, but they are. The dead person being a teacher is like a spit to the face of anyone who tried to figure out the truth before it was revealed. Dead person was supposed to be a student! "Yeah, exactly - *you supposed*, ha-ha, wrong!" - they just sucker punch your logic. This is not a fair game. Can't exactly catch them by the hand, yeah, since it's a person involved with the class. But I can't help but feel that "rules are being changed as the game goes by" kind of sh-t was going on here. And in the end, all is well, right? *Misaki smiles knowingly* WHAT, bitch? In the end the calamity remains unexplained, and it's as if nobody f-cking cares that it should continue. They just leave a hint for the next haples bunch. Season 2, anyone? Not me. But again, it's all well and good as entertainment. I don't watch anime to be entertained, though. I try to pick those which have a soul at least, maybe explore ideas that make one think beyond their usual, maybe subtly nudge to being more aware and caring. Invoking emotion is easy when you know how to do it. Making this also carry meaning and provoke a change in audience is much more important. If it's not done, then entertainment is merely a substance that alters audience state for a while and then gets pissed out of their system, maybe leaving a bad aftertaste. |
