F*ck this show for killing the only really good character, and in what way! He came to his damn senses, he shoudl have lived. if Kurusu really deems himself human with independent will, he should've stayed soft till the end saved him..

Was more obvious at the end. But this really was just a play portraying the lives of how vampires kinda have cruddy lives and the bittersweet ending of it all. The after credits showed the cast being in a ok state but with their immortality this was just a small part of their lives.

I am glad at least a handful of people in the replies talk about what a masterclass this episode or show is.

I finished rewatching it today, and holy shit, I am actually debating giving it a 10/10.

and if you look at my list I'm not one of those potatoes who gives every second show a 10. this was just.... wow. I am actually speechless.

for the record, 95% of the "flaws" that people talk about don't actually exist. it's just that this show has a lot of visual story telling, and if you don't pay attention, you can get somewhat lost from time to time.

here's the thing.

The pilot is one of, if not the single best pilot I have ever seen, specially on a rewatch.

episode 6 is great, and 7 is even better.

episode 12 seems rushed at first glance, but when you really pay attention to what it is trying to do and say, it's actually perfect.

episode 13 is the best episode in the whole, and one of the best endings I have ever seen.

all of these are largely thanks to the show having 10/10, music, and direction.

the story structure will take your average person at least one rewatch to get your head around, but you can get it your first time through if you know how to, and what to pay attention to. and once you do get it, you'll realize how clean and perfectly the story comes together. and you feel stupid for not getting it sooner.

every single character except maybe Rufus, is bloody fantastic, but Maeda is easily the best character here.

that is all. if you hated it, rewatch it and pay attention, if you loved it still do the same. I for one liked it way more the second time, and it was already in my top 30 the first time.

Welp, that was a touching end and a sad death for Maeda. I really liked the storyboarding in this show.

It wasn't nearly as bad as the ratings might led you to believe
the sceneries, settings and atmosphere had something special about them, I think they suited the poetic theme the show had
pacing, construction or overall the screenplay wasn't really consistent which I believe was the major issue, I wish it was planned a bit better

All in all I enjoyed it, it was serene watching experience
Also the OSTs were good

Well, I won't give it a 10, that's for sure, though I aggree the pilot was great. The anime overall wasn't. One of the biggest reasons why it's not a masterpiece, is because it's pretentious. I mean, when you have an actual play, you have... yeah, you have *two options* (using the catchphrase of unit 16) - to experience it as it goes, or to view it as a critic (appreciation of how a play is made and presented is a form of criticism, because you understand the works, rather than experience it). Only a few are capable of holding both - the prodound experience *and* understanding of the works. Ideally this is the author him/her self. When the author deliberately shows us it is a play *and* heavily references the classic, it's pretense. I don't care how much the director loves (if even) Western classical plays, if his own story doesn't hold water. I personally hate when they combine Wilde with Shakespeare, it makes me physically suffer, don't know about you guys. I also believe Shakespeare doesn't combine with vampires in general, he's just too sunny and optimistic to me, believe it or not. And then they went and added f-ng Orpeus to that.

Okay, we get it, this is so-o-o-o artistic. Show me, don't tell me about it. But aside from a few episodes, pacing here sucks balls, it's barely tolerable, and it's definitely not poetic. For most of the time, visual storitelling was rescueing this, I just love the style here, but even that was overdone sometimes. So they didn't keep the poetics of the pilot neither in sound, nor in visuals, and not in structure with any consistency, and in the end we got some very confusing and compressed finale. Flashbacks aren't delivered well most of the time here.
And there are things I honestly don't understand about the plot. I don't say it should be realistic, but for example what happened to the S-class european vampires - I totally don't get it, a simple "poisoning" won't cut it, besides, they were supposed to be soldiers or operatives, but we were just shown two vampire nobles who were definitely not here to serve anyone.

Unit 16 "super" vampires are hulking brutes that *anyone* with a knife can disable/kill while they slo-o-owly turn around, and what's even the point of putting them into those suits when they need to hunt vampires by night? This is simply stupid. One human soldier from Jin Roh can devastate the entire unit of those. He also looks scary, and they don't. Maeda's young assistand died purely as a plot device, while he could be easily saved (why the hell there are even human riflemen if they are so useless?). Maeda's old friend died pointlessly and we can argue that Misaki did too, depending on how you look at it. She was not crazy (repeating what she did before being turned? BS - we are clearly shown she is aware of who Maeda is, while WE aren't yet), she knew what she wanted, but when we look at all of it together, it was all too STAGED. And I mean it in a bad sense.

Those deaths are merely convenient elimination from the plot, it is a sign of bad writing. I don't believe in the end even Misaki's dramatic end means anything, because Maeda is a one track minded serviceman, who is just being given a retirement, and replaced by a younger man, who also abandons his love not even for duty as 16th Unit is disbanded. For what? For dramatic effect. I absolutely hate this about plays, it's a false idealism. It looks great when the context is right (say, a patriotic stories, or religious pieces, or mythical ones, when characters sacrifice their private happiness for something greater). But otherwise it feels dumb. The contrast with pilot is striking in the end. They even made the gal reporter a spitting image of Misaki, which is just proving what I said above - the ending was supposed to be a strong point, but it isn't. So she will wait for him forever. Touching? In a sense. If it wasn't unnecessary for them to part. Such dramatic devices are difficult to use well. It's like walking on thin ice. Main cast looks thin, one-dimensional because of that.

There are anime which are extremely subtle about the staging thing, and those that can even break "4th wall" without losing the impact, and then there is this pretentious middle-ground.
Can't say it's bad, but it could be much better. I mostly gave it 7 because of the era and artstyle and somewhat likeable characters and the attempt of being unusual/artistic. But it falls short of being good, it's just not bad.
