Housenka

This newly released (I'm writing this on Sep 5, 2026) ~90mins long anime movie is created by the dynamic duo of Kinoshita and Konomoto (ODDTAXI). They, along with the up and coming studio CLAP, work in unison to create another vintage themed drama. Though the story isn't as tight as that of ODDTAXI, the slow burn theatrical experience along with 70's-80's themed BGM passes with flying colors.

Thematic Discussion:
The central theme of the movie is simple to understand if you pay attention to the dialogues - just keep living and ride out the harsh times. Behind the clouds, the sun still shines. No matter how down-in-the-dumps ... you are, don't lose hope for the chance of a great comeback. The two recurring visual cues used here -- the touch-me-not flower and the Othello board game -- supports that very theme. The simplistic character designs and the slow paced direction play out nicely to develop this theme into full bloom at the finale.

Final Thoughts:
Fans of ODDTAXI or slow paced older films/series should like this a lot. Suitable for mature audiences who like slow-burn, dialogue-heavy, and character-based drama. 8/10

“The Last Blossom” follows the story of Akutsu, an elderly prisoner serving life in solitary confinement. As he lies at the end of his life, a small balsam flower growing within his cell suddenly begins speaking to him. What starts as a surreal and almost absurd conversation slowly unfolds into something much deeper. Through his exchanges with the flower, Akutsu begins to reflect on the life he once lived: his years as a struggling yakuza, his complicated relationship with a woman named Nana, and the series of decisions that ultimately led him to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

While the premise may initially ... sound strange, the film uses this supernatural element not for spectacle but as a vehicle for introspection. The talking flower becomes almost like a mirror for Akutsu’s conscience - questioning him, provoking memories, and forcing him to confront the truths he has spent decades avoiding. As his past is revealed piece by piece, the audience is invited to slowly reconstruct the life of a man who once believed he was in control of his own destiny.

At its core, “The Last Blossom” explores themes of regret, redemption, and the quiet consequences of our decisions. The film asks viewers to consider how small moments - the words left unsaid, the opportunities overlooked, the relationships taken for granted - can ultimately shape the direction of an entire life. Through Akutsu’s reflections, the story encourages the audience to pause and consider how their own choices might one day be viewed in hindsight.

One of the film’s most prominent visual symbols is the balsam flower itself, which functions as more than just Akutsu’s unlikely companion. The flower serves as a recurring motif throughout the story, representing both the fragility and resilience of life. Even within the confined space of a prison cell, something capable of growth and reflection remains. In this sense, the flower becomes a symbol of the possibility, however small, that understanding and change can still emerge even at the end of a life.

Another subtle yet meaningful motif appears through the recurring presence of Othello, the strategy board game that Akutsu plays throughout his life. The game becomes a quiet metaphor for the film’s central message: no matter how the board looks at a given moment, it is always possible for the outcome to change. The idea that “you can always turn it around” echoes throughout the narrative, reflecting both Akutsu’s persistence and the broader theme that life’s trajectory is often shaped by the choices made in critical moments.

The film’s soundtrack further strengthens its reflective tone. Rather than relying on dramatic musical cues, the score is understated and atmospheric, allowing moments of silence and contemplation to speak just as loudly as the dialogue. This restrained approach gives the story room to breathe and reinforces the introspective nature of the narrative.

Ultimately, “The Last Blossom” is not a fast-paced film, nor is it meant to be. Its slower pacing allows the audience to sit with its themes and consider the weight of the questions it raises. For viewers willing to engage with its reflective tone, the film offers a thoughtful meditation on the nature of choice, memory, and the meaning people assign to their own lives.

In the end, "The Last Blossom" leaves viewers with a quiet but powerful message: a life is rarely defined by a single decision, but by the accumulation of many small choices made over time. Understanding those choices, and the people connected to them, may be the closest anyone comes to understanding the true shape of their life.

Baku Kinoshita's feature directorial debut, not counting the Odd Taxi film re-edit of the TV series, Housenka, is a different creative endeavor. Kinoshita has stated he pitched multiple story ideas to collaborator and scriptwriter Kazuya Konomoto, to which Konomoto chose the idea of an old man speaking to a flower, the baseline concept for Housenka. Deviating from the dialogue-driven, punchy, and anxious mystery in Odd Taxi, Kinoshita wanted his latest project to take the quieter angle of reflection in a slow drama. His vision of where this film was headed is starkly different than the completed product we have and wastes Konomoto's known talents for ... tight comedy-centric dialogue. In Housenka, a small-time yakuza member (Minoru Akutsu) who is currently serving a life sentence ponders about the life he's lived and the choices he's made. Frequently, he references a so-called "comeback," a blanket term describing what he considers a purposeful existence, a win in the game of life. A lot of Akutsu's reminiscing entails him muttering with a talking balsam flower, which I firmly believe is a figment of his old age and senile imagination. Regardless, the sarcastic flower is simultaneously a detriment thematically and a major redeeming quality for what quickly becomes an unremarkable tale of regret and love.

The beginning of his reflection starts in the summer of 1986, when he moves into a home with a girl he met at a bar, Nana, and her toddler son, Kensuke. From here, the story sort of loosely characterizes the current state of the yakuza, stuck between clinging to the heights of their fame and adjusting to the times, a common theme in Japanese media. Kinoshita opens the film with a subdued atmosphere and maintains it for the first two acts. Akutsu, in typical yakuza fashion, is rugged, awkwardly flubbing anything resembling emotional openness. The voice actors for Akutsu and Nana are prominent live-action stars, not necessarily trained for the intonation nuances in traditional animation voice acting. It's apparent in the exchanges between the two leads, where the vocal delivery remains flat, marking play-like theatrics. Monotone voices atop a mostly monotone film tread over a line of lackluster robotic inflection that fails to engage the audience with what's being said. Akutsu's recollection of how he treated Nana, essentially not admitting to his feelings, cleanly falls into saccharine tropes that are eye-rollingly predictable from a mile away. Sentimentality strikes a wholesome chord when the crescendo feels earned, and Housenka is standoffish about developing the story's momentum until the final act.

Kinoshita and Konomoto mistake subtlety for detachment, and thematically, it is on-the-nose and distant. The balsam flower's role is blunt criticism of Akutsu's very human actions, and its dialogue is often spelling out the obvious hidden gestures behind Akutsu's seemingly tough appearance. Frankly, it's a forceful touch in the humor department, as it frames all of these heavy-handed insights as jokes, some of which are certainly wry, by comparing the trivial concerns of a human to a plant's life cycle. The flower slightly compensates for its pointless dialogue by exhibiting the best character animation in the film. Still, all of it is drab, too uninteresting to emotionally uplift, and Housenka plays the yakuza cards a lot more safely than it implies. A lot of the supposed yakuza rebranding is mentioned in passing, and important members that are mentioned are nearly never on-screen. At the height of the climax, the viewer is kept at arm's length from being invested in the success or failure of the plan because, narratively, stakes have not sufficiently been developed. In the present, as Akutsu is recalling his past, a change in his outlook on life is implied, also an abrupt realization without an ample glimpse into his prison duration. This makes the sudden revelation a shot in the dark.

In Odd Taxi, where the simplistic visual style worked in favor of the slow burn guesswork, digital puppet animation was passable. Studio CLAP's production for Housenka reportedly had a clear goal of replicating 1980s-era Japan, integrating a retro look and prioritizing color design in the scenery. The strong blues and greens are present, but the animation does not translate to the higher budget and capacity for interesting character acting. In numerous scenes, particularly in the prison cell, there is a reliance on static shots and despite Kinoshita's intention to accentuate subtler movements, it simply doesn't exist. Character animation is largely minimal or stiff throughout, lending to a general lack of fluidity across the board. The balsam flower has a few moments where the human-like expressionism is obvious, and it exudes a charming personality. Barring the flower, the singular striking sequence is a drone-like extended shot of a fireworks show in the midst of the explosions, a memorable scene given the perspective. It's a shame really that the production here is as plain as it is, exacerbating the qualms with the dramatic direction.

Housenka at the very least is self-aware about the familiar territory it covers, evident in the minor quirks Kinoshita and Konomoto add to the screenplay and the overarching highly Japanese cultural message: the ancient Shinto connection to nature and the idea that all actions are being watched by the environment. Akutsu having a knack for hyperrealistic drawing and the constant references to "Stand by Me" are all effective and charming distractions from the fact of absent substance, although it is difficult to take the cover of "Stand by Me" seriously. For all its symbolic metaphors through plants and portraying the human side of the yakuza, Housenka, visually and narratively is abjectly missing the kind of ambition we've come to expect from the director/writer duo. Expectations exist because they've proven that they are capable of constructing worthwhile stories. This film feigns how much it delves into cultural significance through mere patience, a waiting game that equates to a sci-fi-esque ending and convenient satisfaction that the audience did not want nor did the storytelling require it. At death's door, Akutsu's contemplation in hindsight would have been enough, and trying to change the stylistic mechanics of the writing late in the third act is futile. A disappointing outing for Kinoshita especially, and while I appreciate more than most an original story, something he's actively advocating for, sentimental musings for the sake of it are a bore.
