Kakyuusei 2: Hitomi no Naka no Shoujo-tachi

This unassuming anime quickly became one of my favorites.
It has just the right amount of soft ecchi / fooling around. The characters are humorously goofy and so are some of the episode plots. And it manages to be just a little serious across the series with an overarching plot. The 2000's style animation also adds to the charm.

All of which is really unusual for a middle-of-nowhere generic school looking anime.
In fact, it's so unusual that this show is way better than Kakyuusei 1, which is not at all worth watching.

PS: Episode 4 has one of the funniest marriage scenes you'll see in an anime.

First of all, every negative comment about this hidden gem is quite undeserved, IMHO. This is an anime to remember, not forget, as Lunar-Anime mistranslated.

You should pay a lot of attention to those little -albeit very important- details about the story, because there's definitely a story and you have to use both logic and imagination to figure it out as you watch each episode. Having said that, I truly recommend this anime to everyone that is willing to appreciate a good suspense and mysterious drama with romance and comedy.

The director for this series is Yousei Morino, the alter-ego to Shigenori Kagayama, in what I'd call ... his 'good' side, because unlike all the ecchi-nonsensical series he's made, Kakyuusei 2 stands, with Pia Carrot 2DX and -to a lesser extent- ONE ~Kagayatsu kisetsu he~ (he could only do so much with just 4 episodes), as his best works, all of those he not only directs but screenplays.

The animation ARMS threw together is tolerable, the character designs are quite appealing but beware of the QUALITY because is in almost every episode (this was a low-budget show made in 2004). Nonetheless, the story grows on you as does the music (Repetitive? Yes, but it does the job of keeping the suspense/mystery going throughout the whole series).

Overall, it kinda grew more on me than I thought it would, so I fully recommend it.

This anime starts with a hook. Without giving anything away, it leads you to believe a major event occurs somewhere in the story and it instantly pricks your interest. It suggests the characters formed a unique bond over some event and you can't wait to find out what it is. And so it begins. You sit and you watch; and you wait. Initially nothing happens then a character appears who makes you extremely curious. Who is he? Why is he there? What is he? It's all very mysterious. So far so good, right? Oh ... how I wish I knew what was to come.

The anime then goes through all thirteen episodes with very little happening. Scenes are repeated ad nauseum and your nostrils will start to twitch. It does however, keep harping back to the hook and you feel you have to keep going because something big is going to happen sooner or later. Alas, it does not. The hook turns out to be merely something that was suggested in passing; and the mysterious character? The attitude is that he is what he is, get over it. He's barely even explained. No major event, nothing. It comes to an end and you're left sitting there with your jaw on your lap, insulted to the core of your being by a story that promised to go clubbing with you all night then went to bed at 9pm with a cup of warm milk instead. It's like waiting all day for the Olympic 100 metres final, only when the moment arrives, the gun goes off to start the race and all the runners slowly get out of the blocks then go home for tea and cake. You feel like you've been conned. If you want to avoid that feeling, avoid this anime at all costs.
