Dragon Ball Z Movie 15: Fukkatsu no "F"

Earth is finally peaceful again, but this calm is short-lived. The remnants of Frieza's army, led by Sorbet and his right hand Tagoma, arrive on Earth in order to summon Shen Long with the goal of resurrecting their old master. To do so, they threaten Emperor Pilaf, Shuu, and Mai for the Dragon Balls in their possession.

Once successfully revived, Frieza—who had been stoking his hatred for Gokuu Son and Future Trunks in Hell—proclaims that he will not be content until they are dead by his hand. Sorbet informs him that Future Trunks has not been heard of in years, and Gokuu's power has far surpassed even that of the mighty Majin Buu. Unfazed, Frieza responds that he only requires a few months of training before being capable of defeating Gokuu.

Will Frieza be able to exact revenge upon his nemesis, or will Gokuu, Vegeta, and their friends prevail against adversity, saving Earth once more?

So apparently this movie is canon and occurs between events in the Dragon Ball Super manga so I decided to give it a watch. I pretty much got what I expected from a Dragon Ball movie: great fights, another strong villain to face, Goku and Vegeta training, all of what makes Dragon Ball what it is. Although nothing in the movie was spectacular, but I still enjoyed myself. The concept of a villain that is gifted with power decided to train for once is interesting at the very least. It's worth watching as a Dragon Ball fan and worth the watch from trying to get ... into Dragon Ball Super so I don't regret watching it.

Mixed Feelings

Okay, so pinanood ko ng buo yung Tagalog dubbed ng Resurrection F. I know, it's been released for like; 2 or 3 years now pero ngayon ko lang napanood yung fight scenes na tagalized. Dati kase pag labanan na, biglang magshi-shift yung audio from Tagalog into English. Ngayon, tagalized na ang full movie. MABUHAY ANG MGA PIRATA!! So yun, maraming beses ko nang napanood/nabasa ang kwentong ito. English, Japanese kahit Latino pa par napanood ko na. At ang performance sa bawat languages ay exhilarating. Though ito ang worst canon part ng story ng buong Dragon Ball Franchise, you can still enjoy it for nostalgia. Dati ... kase nae-enjoy ko lang yung movie dahil sa it's Dragon Ball. And that's it. So Yun, napanood ko yung Tagalog dubbed. Boss Jefferson Utanes as Goku at ang iba pang magaling na cast. No offense sa batang 90s pero hindi naman talaga Z ang napanood kong Dragon Ball eh. Pero yung Kai. Ang tanging part lang ng Z na napanood ko in Tagalog ay ang Cell Games Saga, kalahati ng Babidi Saga hanggang End of Z. So, yeah. Iba yung nostalgia na meron ako kesa sa most of the Dragon Ball Community (yes we have a community), kase ang pinanood ko noon ay Kai. Na-exposed ako sa Kai mga grade 3 ako. Yung naramdaman kong "sensation" (korni ng expression, sorry) nung pinanood ko yung movie ng full Tagalog dubbed ay hindi nostalgia, para bang reunion sa isang kaibigan mula sa pagkabata na matagal kong hinanap pero di ko na muling nakita. Sa ibang dub kase; di naman kase ako sa dub na yon lumaki kaya walang gantong revelation. Wala lang. Ang saya lang. It's weird. Siguro ganto yung naramdaman nung fans ng F4 nang i-remake ang Meteor Garden. Ang naramdaman ng isang die hard fan community ng muling mag-perform ang isang banda o idol group na ilang taon nang disbanded. It's just SO GOOD. It's weird na na-realize ko lang nung panoorin ko ang dub pero, tulad ng Sailor Moon sa mga babaeng Otaku; Dragon Ball is not just an anime from my childhood. It's kinda like an old friend.

The same formula again? Seriously?

Despite being a canonical film, this production genuinely saddened me. Seeing Dragon Ball's creativity wasted in this way is disappointing. The narrative itself is well-constructed, and the events follow a coherent internal logic (except for one point I'll comment on later). The big problem lies in the creative choice: bringing back an old villain is an extremely lazy solution. If it were at least a non-canonical villain, it would make sense to use him to officially integrate him into the Dragon Ball Super saga. However, what we have here is just the reuse of a good idea, already explored so many ... times that it has become tiresome.

Now, about what I consider a glaring plot hole: Shenlong had stated that it wasn't possible to revive Frieza because he no longer possessed a body. So far, so good. However, even with this limitation, Frieza ends up being "resurrected" in the completely mutilated state Trunks left him in. It's worth remembering that Trunks not only cut him in half, but sliced ​​him into several pieces and finally pulverized his remains with a Ki blast. In other words, there was no body at all. So how did Shenlong manage to resurrect him? And even if he did, why bring him back in that chopped-up state? If the dragon was able to restore Frieza's body to a previous state, why not restore him whole? And there's another point: even if the remains had stayed on the ground, wouldn't they have been devoured by animals or decomposed over time, making resurrection impossible? It may seem like a silly question, but this plot hole bothered me so much that it seriously harmed my experience with the film.

The animation is another aspect that needs to be criticized. WHAT A HORRIBLE THING THAT 3D IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHTS! The abrupt mix of 2D and 3D, especially during the action scenes, looks extremely ugly. It's not like in Beastars, where the viewer gets used to the style from the start. Here, the 3D simply appears out of nowhere, giving the clear impression of laziness in animating the 2D fights. It's depressing to watch.

In conclusion, the idea of ​​bringing Frieza's army back makes sense and had potential, but everything else is a weak execution based on a formula already worn out within the work itself. The result is a boring, uninspired film with logical flaws that cause more discomfort than excitement. It's a film that simply didn't need to exist. I don't recommend it.

Final score: 4/10, and it's only not lower because I liked the spotlight given to Vegeta at a certain point in the film.

A mesma fórmula de novo? Sério isso?

Apesar de ser um filme canônico, essa produção me deixou genuinamente triste. Ver a criatividade de Dragon Ball sendo desperdiçada dessa forma é decepcionante. A narrativa, em si, é bem construída e os acontecimentos seguem uma lógica interna coerente com o que é apresentado (com exceção de um ponto que comentarei mais adiante). O grande problema está na escolha criativa: trazer um vilão antigo de volta é uma solução extremamente preguiçosa. Se ao menos fosse um vilão não canônico, faria sentido usá-lo para integrá-lo oficialmente à saga de Dragon Ball Super. No entanto, o que temos aqui é apenas o reaproveitamento de uma boa ideia, já explorada tantas vezes que se tornou cansativa.

Agora, sobre o que considero um furo de roteiro gritante: Shenlong havia afirmado que não era possível reviver Freeza porque ele não possuía mais um corpo. Até aí, tudo bem. Porém, mesmo com essa limitação, Freeza acaba sendo “ressuscitado” no estado completamente retalhado em que Trunks o deixou. Vale lembrar que Trunks não apenas o cortou ao meio, mas o fatiou em vários pedaços e, por fim, pulverizou seus restos com uma rajada de Ki. Ou seja, não existia corpo algum. Então como Shenlong conseguiu ressuscitá-lo? E, mesmo conseguindo, por que trazê-lo de volta naquele estado picotado? Se o dragão foi capaz de restaurar um estado anterior do corpo de Freeza, por que não restaurá-lo inteiro? E ainda há outro ponto: mesmo que os restos tivessem permanecido no chão, não seriam devorados por animais ou decompostos com o tempo, tornando a ressurreição impossível? Pode até parecer um questionamento bobo, mas esse furo me incomodou tanto que prejudicou seriamente minha experiência com o filme.

A animação é outro aspecto que precisa ser criticado. QUE COISA HORROROSA ESSE 3D NO MEIO DAS LUTAS! A mescla abrupta de 2D com 3D, especialmente durante as cenas de ação, fica extremamente feia. Não é como em Beastars, onde o espectador se acostuma com o estilo desde o início. Aqui, o 3D simplesmente surge do nada, dando a clara impressão de preguiça em animar as lutas em 2D. É deprimente de assistir.

Em conclusão, a ideia de trazer a tropa de Freeza de volta até faz sentido e tinha potencial, mas todo o resto é uma execução fraca baseada em uma fórmula já desgastada dentro da própria obra. O resultado é um filme chato, sem inspiração e com falhas lógicas que causam mais desconforto do que empolgação. É um filme que simplesmente não precisava existir. Não recomendo.
Nota final: 4/10, e só não é menor porque gostei do destaque dado ao Vegeta em determinado momento do filme.
